How to Restore a Database Backup and Resolve C-Drive Permission Issues in Webgility Desktop

This article helps Webgility Desktop users migrate their Webgility Desktop database by addressing common issues such as C-drive permission errors and uncertainty about backup completion. It provides step-by-step instructions to verify the backup file, resolve local access issues, and restore the Webgility Desktop database on a new device, ensuring a smooth and successful migration process.

Causes of Issues

  • C-drive access restrictions: Insufficient folder permissions prevent backup or restore operations.

  • Database backup missing or corrupt: No usable backup is found or file is incomplete.

  • Antivirus or security tools blocking access: Some security settings block operations in system folders.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Confirm the Database Backup Exists

  • Open Webgility Desktop and navigate to:
    System > Backup

  • Choose a backup location such as:
    C:\Webgility

  • Navigate to the folder and verify the .bak file exists.

  • Try copying the file to another location to confirm it’s not corrupted.

2. Identify Access Errors on the C-Drive

  • Check if you encounter any messages such as Access Denied or Permission Error while creating or restoring the backup.

  • These errors typically indicate insufficient write access to C:\Webgility or the destination folder.

3. Adjust C-Drive Folder Permissions (for Admin/IT)

  • Right-click on the Webgility folder (e.g., C:\Webgility)

  • Go to Properties > Security Tab

  • Grant Full Control to the user running Webgility Desktop.

  • Ensure antivirus or endpoint protection tools aren’t blocking the folder.

4. Restore Backup on a New Device (if needed)

  • Install Webgility Desktop & SQL server on a new device.

  • Complete the setup until you reach the database configuration screen.

  • Transfer the verified .bak file to the new device using a secure method.

  • Open Webgility Desktop and choose:
    System > Restore

  • Select the transferred .bak file.

  • Follow the restore prompts and wait for the process to complete.

  • Once restored, launch Webgility Desktop to confirm everything is working correctly.

Notes

  • Database restore time may vary depending on file size.

  • Always run Webgility Desktop with Administrator Rights for migration tasks.

  • Keep backup copies in secure, accessible locations.
